Historical context modifies plant diversity–community productivity relationships in alpine grassland

چکیده
Abstract While most studies yield positive relationships between biodiversity (B) and ecosystem functioning (EF), awareness is growing that BEF can vary with ecological context. The has led to increased efforts understand how contemporary environmental context modifies relationships, but the role of historical context, mechanisms by which it may influence effects, remains poorly understood. We examined alters plant diversity–community productivity via species interactions in alpine grassland. also tested plants arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, potentially mediate above processes. studied effects on community at two grassland sites different histories related grazing intensity—heavy versus light livestock grazing—but similar current management. assembled experimental communities identical composition from each disturbed soil a heavily grazed grassland, ranging richness one two, three six species. Moreover, we carried out hyphae‐exclusion experiment test AM fungi responses detected significantly diversity–productivity relationship was driven complementarity composed site without heavy‐grazing history, no such history. Plants history had competitive ability yields low‐diversity disrupted high‐diversity communities. benefitted more fungal than did Synthesis . Using same design species, contexts showed relationships. Our results suggest alter plant–soil interactions. Therefore, considering importance for advancing our understanding long‐term impacts anthropogenic disturbance functioning.

The diversity–biomass–productivity relationships in grassland management and restoration
Diversity, biomass, and productivity, the three key community/ecosystem variables, are interrelated and pose reciprocal influences on each other. The relationships among the three variables have been a central focus in ecology and formed two schools of fundamentally different nature with two related applications: (1) management – how biomass manipulation (e.g., grazing, burning) affects diversi...

The mycorrhizal contribution to plant productivity, plant nutrition and soil structure in experimental grassland.
Previous studies have shown that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can influence plant diversity and ecosystem productivity. However, little is known about the effects of AMF and different AMF taxa on other important community properties such as nutrient acquisition, plant survival and soil structure. We established experimental grassland microcosms and tested the impact of AMF and of differen...
متن کاملSymbiotic bacteria as a determinant of plant community structure and plant productivity in dune grassland.
Symbiotic interactions are thought to play a key role in ecosystems. Empirical evidence for the impact of symbiotic bacteria on plant communities is, however, extremely scarce because of experimental constraints. Here, in three complementary experiments, we show that nitrogen-fixing rhizobia bacteria act as a determinant of plant community structure and diversity. Grassland microcosms inoculate...
